Door-to-Door Uniform tips in 2021

Door-to-door sales aren’t easy. Your crew spends countless hours dealing with rejection, disappointment, and even angry outbursts.

It’s a hard job…and it only gets harder when your uniform is uncomfortable, they wear out, or they keep your customers from taking you seriously.

Nothing quite ruins a potential sale like showing up hot, sweaty, and grumpy in a sun-faded outfit. You don’t want your crew worrying about their clothes or gear while they’re making a sale. You want them comfortable, happy, and excited to represent a business that cares about its sales team.

So, as you get ready to outfit your crew for 2020, here are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind.

First Impressions are Key in Door-to-Door Sales

As the summer sales season approaches, it’s natural to spend most of your time thinking about what your team needs to make the actual sale simple and easy—things like point-of-sale devices and your sales software.

However, as important as that gear is, it’s not the only equipment your team will need. For example, here are just a few of the other things you may need to outfit your crew:

  • Polos
  • Hats
  • Binders
  • Clipboards
  • Side bags
  • Backpacks
  • Shorts

Clothes may make the man (or woman), but they aren’t the only gear your crew will need this summer. You don’t want your team to show up with a hodgepodge of non-branded (or worse, off-brand) gear, just because you didn’t think about how they would carry around all of the stuff you’re giving them. Consider a worn backpack from high school compared to a side bag or backpack with your logo on it.

That being said, you will want to pay special attention to your team’s uniforms. If your potential customers are turned off by the way your sales team looks in their uniforms, it really won’t matter how smooth the point-of-sale experience is.

If you don’t think through your gear and the beating it’s going to take in the coming months… it will affect the impression your crew will make all summer.

‘Cheap’ And ‘Good Deal’ Are Not The Same Thing

A cheap shirt is easy to spot, and it makes your business look cheap. If your business looks cheap and shoddy, people will assume that your product is, too. Your sales team will also take this into consideration when shopping around for the employer that will offer the best summer sales experience.

When thinking about what sort of gear your crew will need, you also need to make sure that you are picking the right gear for the job. Sure, there are ways to get branded gear for cheap, but if you end up having to re-outfit your crew in a month because their gear is trashed…are you really saving money?

Picking the wrong gear is bad for sales. It’s bad for morale. To be honest, it’s just bad for business.

The Right Door-to-Door Uniforms can Improve Motivation, Sales, and Customer Perception

For example, if your crew is going to be working in the summer heat, you want to pick a black or white shirt to help hide sweat spots. Even better, put them in shirts with ventilated armpits. It’ll make them (and your customers) a lot more comfortable.

Nothing screams “I’m here to sell you something” like a guy beating on your door in a sun-faded polo with giant sweat spots under his arms. He might earn a few pity points and a glass of water, but that’s about it. Put that same person in a ventilated polo, though, and he’s a lot more likely to come off as approachable.

There are a lot of different factors to consider when picking your gear.

  • What will the weather be like?
  • If your crew needs hats, how will you balance comfort and sweat?
  • What color of fabric will best handle prolonged sun exposure and sweat stains?
  • And the list goes on…

It’s a lot to think about, but making sure that you pick the right gear for your crew’s needs can save you time, help keep morale up, and ultimately improve your sales numbers.
